Mat Messerschmidt
Visiting Professor - Deep Springs College
I am a recent (2022) PhD, having received my degree from the University of Chicago's interdisciplinary Committee on Social Thought, concentrating in philosophy. I have been teaching in that University's Self, Culture, and Society sequence in the Division of the Social Sciences before heading to Deep Springs College in the autumn of 2024 as a visiting professor.
My scholarship and teaching center on Continental philosophy from Nietzsche onwards, but also explores connections with other genres and fields, such as literature, literary theory, and theology. My dissertation investigated the meaning and implications of Nietzsche's death of God (see "Research" for more details).
